The California Academy of Math and Science (CAMS) in Carson, California has a reputation for excellence in academics and athletics. With its strong focus on STEM education and competitive sports teams, the school has produced top-notch students and athletes. As the new academic year approaches, we caught up with Coach Harry Patrick Bugarin to discuss CAMS' sports programs and what to expect from the teams this year. Coach Bugarin has been the head coach for the boys' varsity basketball team at CAMS for the past four years and has had a successful record, leading the team to multiple league championships. But Bugarin's involvement with the school goes beyond just coaching. He is an alumnus of CAMS and has been a part of the school community for 10 years, as both a student and a coach. Q: Can you tell us about the athletic programs at CAMS and what makes them unique? A: CAMS has a wide range of athletic programs, including basketball, soccer, cross country, track and field, and volleyball. What sets us apart is our focus on a well-rounded student-athlete. We prioritize academics just as much as we do sports and emphasize the importance of both in our students' lives. Our coaches also prioritize character development and instill values such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance in our athletes. Q: How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected sports at CAMS? A: Like all schools and sports programs, we were greatly impacted by the pandemic. Our basketball season last year was cut short, and all other sports were canceled for the remainder of the year. It was tough for our athletes, especially the seniors who were looking forward to their final season. But we have adapted and made the necessary changes to ensure the safety of our student-athletes. This year, we are hopeful to have a full sports season, but we will continue to follow all safety protocols and guidelines. Q: What can we expect from the boys' varsity basketball team this year? A: We have a young but talented team this year. We lost some key players from last year due to graduation, but we have some returning players who have developed their skills and will step up as leaders. Our goal is to maintain our winning record and compete for the league championship. We have been consistently at the top of our league, and we hope to continue that streak this year.
