The 2024-2025 season marked a new chapter for Chase High School boys basketball under first-year head coach Jacob Bauman. Though the record may not reflect it, with just one win on the year, the growth, resilience, and development of this young squad laid a strong foundation for the future of the program. Key Contributors Spark Growth Freshman point guard Malik Carson was a revelation, showcasing relentless energy and a slashing offensive style. Despite being just 5’9", he averaged 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game, cementing himself as a future star in both basketball and track. Senior Layton Winkelman, the team’s emotional anchor and lone upperclassman, provided vital leadership while holding down the paint. Despite being undersized at 5’10", he was among the state’s rebounding leaders and added 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per contest. Highlights in a Season of Rebuilding Coming off a winless season with only three returning players, Chase broke a two-year losing streak with a memorable team performance, highlighted by career-high scoring nights from Carson (33), junior Leland Rice (14), and Winkelman (14). The victory served as both a confidence booster and a turning point, showing tangible progress. Rising Talents and Breakthroughs Freshman Duncan MacLaren and sophomore Carlos Rincon each embraced larger roles as the season went on. Duncan began the year as an offensive spark plug with defensive gaps, while Carlos brought tough defense but limited scoring. Both worked to become more well-rounded, showing significant strides on both ends of the court. Responding to Adversity The team faced a major setback when freshman starter Dominick Estabrook suffered an injury. In his absence, Rincon stepped into the lineup and elevated the team’s defense. Estabrook, even while sidelined, became a vocal leader from the bench, rallying his teammates and contributing to the team’s growing identity. Leadership and Legacy Winkelman’s presence set the tone for Chase basketball. He embodied grit and hustle, diving for loose balls and battling for every rebound. His example left a lasting impression on the younger players and helped define what it means to compete with heart. Looking Forward Coach Bauman is enthusiastic about the future. With only two projected seniors and a strong core of rising sophomores, the team is poised for major improvement. Eighth-grade standout Troy MacLaren is expected to make an immediate varsity impact next season, adding depth and energy to an already hungry group. Offseason Plans and Vision The focus this offseason is clear: find the team's identity. With past coaching turnover hindering continuity and offseason development, Bauman plans to instill structure and accountability, using the summer months to prepare for a breakout season in 2025.
