As the spring season approaches, the Concord High School track team is gearing up for another competitive year. Led by head coach Jerry Redmond, the team is determined to make this a season to remember. With the return of several key players and the addition of promising newcomers, the team is poised to make a strong impact in their conference. I had the opportunity to speak with Coach Redmond about the team's outlook for the upcoming season and he shared some valuable insight into the team's strengths and potential areas of improvement. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Redmond was quick to highlight the team's emphasis on collective effort rather than individual achievements. He stated, "We want to emphasize the team this year. I know the track is performed individually, but by putting the team first, the individual success will come." This focus on team unity and solidarity is a key factor in the success of any sports team, and it is evident that Coach Redmond is instilling these values in his players. One of the top returning players this year is Zoe Roberts, the team's top distance runner for the past three years. According to Coach Redmond, Roberts has been working hard and is expected to be a major contributor to the team's success this season. Her dedication and determination make her a valuable asset to the team and a force to be reckoned with on the track. In addition to Roberts, the team also has all of their top sprinters returning, which gives them a strong advantage in the short-distance races. Coach Redmond believes that if they can maintain their focus and work hard, they have the potential to be very competitive in their conference. He also mentioned three standout hurdlers, Evie Mashala, Ava Dixon, and Lucile Odhiambo, who have the potential to be some of the top hurdlers in their conference. While the top returning players are expected to play a significant role in the team's success, Coach Redmond also highlighted the impact that new players could have on the team. He mentioned that there are some newcomers who will be participating in track for the first time this season and it remains to be seen how much they can contribute. However, Coach Redmond is confident that with hard work and dedication, these new players can make an immediate impact on the team's performance. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Redmond looks for certain qualities in his players. He stated, "We want captains who are not just talented athletes, but also have strong leadership skills and can inspire and motivate their teammates." The team captains play a crucial role in setting the tone for the team and keeping everyone focused and determined. Currently, the team has not yet announced their captains, but Coach Redmond mentioned that there are several players who are potential candidates for the role. However, as with any sport, there are always areas that the team can improve upon. Coach Redmond mentioned that one of the biggest challenges for the team is staying injury-free. With a short season, any injury to a key athlete could significantly affect the team's overall performance. Therefore, the team is taking extra precautions to ensure that their players are staying healthy and injury-free. As the season approaches, there is a sense of excitement and determination surrounding the Concord High School track team. With a strong emphasis on teamwork, a talented group of returning players, and promising newcomers, the team is looking to make their mark in their conference this year. With the guidance of Coach Redmond and the hard work of the players, there is no doubt that the Concord High School track team will have a successful season.
