As the start of the new season approaches, Coach Drew Malabre and his team at Deer Park High School are gearing up for another successful year. With a mix of returning players and new additions, the team is focused on building a strong program and developing athletes at the next level. The top returning players from last season include Payton Barr, Thomas Iovine, Gavin Lallbachan, Max Ferguson, Hasaan Saqib, and Onwuka (Charles) Offiah. These players bring a variety of skills and qualities to the team, making them stand out on and off the court. Payton Barr, a rising senior and team captain, is a natural-born leader who is dedicated to his team, school, and community. He is also a multi-sport athlete and has been a part of the boys' volleyball program for two years. Thomas Iovine, a rising sophomore, is dedicated and hardworking, and also a multi-sport athlete. Both of these players will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the team this season. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Malabre looks for qualities such as selflessness, grit, integrity, honesty, determination, and a positive attitude. Currently, Payton Barr is the sole captain, but there are other players who are also battling for the role, including Gavin Lallbachan, Max Ferguson, Hasaan Saqib, and Onwuka (Charles) Offiah. This competition for the role of captain shows the team's depth and leadership potential. Team chemistry and camaraderie are crucial elements for any successful team, and Coach Malabre has a plan in place to foster these qualities within his team. This includes weekly open gyms, team parties and events, as well as grass and beach season in the spring and summer. These activities not only help build team unity, but also improve the players' skills and overall performance. In order to push his players to reach their full potential, Coach Malabre brings in friends, former athletes, and coaches to offer different perspectives and techniques. This also helps to motivate the players and show them that there is always room for improvement and growth. One of the biggest challenges in preparing for this season has been securing gym space. With the main gym recently being redone, the team is still waiting for a few finishing touches before they can use the space. However, Coach Malabre has found creative ways to work around this challenge and continues to train his team. The team's schedule for this season is still being finalized, but Coach Malabre is looking forward to facing tough opponents and competing in competitive games. He also plans on implementing a diverse and dedicated coaching staff, along with the support of the school and community, to help the team succeed. As a coach, Drew Malabre's philosophy is to prioritize the mental aspect of the game. He believes that having grit, interest, IQ, and determination are crucial qualities for success in volleyball. He also emphasizes the importance of smart and strategic play, rather than solely relying on physical attributes. In terms of training and conditioning, Coach Malabre has made changes and improvements to the team's program with the help of Coach Stucklen. Her background in exercise science and physical fitness has allowed for a more diverse and effective training regimen for the athletes. The team's strengths include a diverse and experienced coaching staff, strong support from the school and community, driven athletes and alumni, and a winning attitude. On the other hand, weaknesses include a relatively new program (only 2-3 years old), a lack of an established athlete pipeline, and challenges with securing practice time and gym space. However, Coach Malabre and his team are determined to overcome these obstacles and continue to improve and grow as a program. In conclusion, the Deer Park High School boys' volleyball team is ready to take on the upcoming season with determination and a strong team dynamic. With a mix of returning players and promising new additions, Coach Malabre and his coaching staff are confident that the team will make strides towards their ultimate goal of developing skilled and competitive athletes. The players' dedication and hard work, along with the support from the community, will undoubtedly lead the team to success both on and off the court.
