As the new season approaches, anticipation and excitement grow among the players, coaches, and fans at Del Norte High School. With a renewed focus on teamwork, discipline, and determination, the Del Norte lacrosse team is ready to take the field and compete at the highest level. I had the privilege of speaking with Coach Jose Soto to get a preview of what we can expect from the Del Norte team this year. “Our overall goal for the team this season is to compete at the highest level and strive for excellence both on and off the field,” Coach Soto shared. This is a sentiment that is echoed by many coaches, but at Del Norte, it is more than just a cliché. The team truly embraces this mindset and works hard every day to achieve their goals. Key to their success this season will be strong teamwork, discipline, and relentless determination. “The team chemistry and camaraderie are vital,” Coach Soto explained. “We plan on implementing team-building activities, open communication, and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every player feels valued and supported.” When discussing players who will play key roles this season, Coach Soto mentioned top returning players Kyra Evans, Elise Cardall, and Audrey Aparri. These players not only bring experience and skill to the team, but they also lead by example and set a high standard for their teammates. In addition to these established players, Coach Soto also has high expectations for the impact of some new players. “We have several new players who we believe will make an immediate impact on the team with their talent and dedication,” he said. Keep an eye out for Elle Standing, Rowan Sutherland, and Serena Chan, who are poised to make significant contributions this season. In terms of leadership, Coach Soto looks for players who exemplify traits such as resilience, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude. Currently, players like Kyra Evans and Elise Cardall are displaying these qualities and are being considered for the captaincy role. “Leadership is not just about leading on the field, but also leading by example off the field,” Coach Soto added. Motivating players to push themselves to their full potential is a crucial aspect of coaching, and Coach Soto places a lot of emphasis on this. “I motivate my players by setting high standards, providing positive reinforcement, and emphasizing the importance of hard work and perseverance,” he stated.
