As the spring season approaches, many high schools are gearing up for their track and field programs. At East Bakersfield High School, the goal every year is to win a league championship. This year is no different. We had the chance to catch up with Coach Bland to give us a preview of the team and what to expect this season. The top returners for the boys' team are Axel Ramirez and Jared Delgado. For the girls' team, Leslie Aquino and Andrea Martinez are the top returners. Coach Bland has nothing but praise for these athletes, noting their hard work, talent, and leadership abilities. Axel Ramirez is a standout distance runner who sets the tone at practice and is always willing to help his younger teammates. Jared Delgado, on the other hand, is the team's best thrower and leads by example with his 100% effort in everything he does. Coach Bland is confident that these two strong returners will play a key role in the team's success this season. The girls' team also has two standout returners in Leslie Aquino and Andrea Martinez. Leslie is the reigning league champion in both the 1600 and 3200 meter races, and Coach Bland is excited to see her defend her titles this year. Andrea is also a force to be reckoned with, as she shaved a remarkable 7 seconds off her 400 meter time last season and continues to improve every day. One thing that sets track and field apart from other sports is the natural team chemistry that forms among the athletes. Coach Bland attributes this to the hard work they put in together day in and day out. This bond carries over to meets, where the teammates support and encourage each other. As a coach, Coach Bland's main focus is on giving positive reinforcement whenever possible. With track and field being 80% mental, he emphasizes the importance of mindset and encourages his athletes to push themselves to their full potential. "You will get the results based on the work you put in," Coach Bland says. "If they don't work hard, it will show." When asked about his coaching style, Coach Bland shares that he is constantly evolving and adapting to what is best for his athletes. He is a student of the game and is always looking to improve and learn new techniques. He also stresses the importance of mental and emotional well-being, making sure to keep any personal issues his athletes may have confidential.
