As the new season approaches for the El Camino High School swim team, there is a sense of excitement and determination in the air. Coach Scott Wagner has high hopes for the team this year, and a clear vision of what it takes for them to achieve success. The overall goal for the team this season is to enjoy the sport, while also focusing on work ethic and competing with determination. For the girls team, the goal is to repeat as league champions, while the boys team aims to make top 2 in the league. This shows the drive and ambition within the team to not only do well, but also to reach new heights. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Wagner had high praise for Ava Wagner and Ayla Boose on the girls team. Ava, a top sprinter, is described as competitive and determined, while Ayla is praised as a great all-rounder who makes everyone around her better. On the boys team, Wesley Sczupak, a top breaststroke swimmer and sprinter, and Isaiah Nordhues, the best all-round player, are expected to lead the team to success. In addition to these returning players, Coach Wagner also expects freshman Tiffany Ko to make an immediate impact on the team. Her talent and determination are sure to contribute greatly to the team's performance this season. Leadership and team captains play an important role in any sports team. Coach Wagner looks for older athletes who have been part of the team in the past, as they bring experience and knowledge to guide and inspire their teammates. He also looks for qualities such as leadership, work ethic, and positive energy in potential team captains. While the team captains have not been decided yet, it is clear that they will play an important role in creating a cohesive and successful team. Team chemistry and camaraderie are crucial for any team's success. Coach Wagner believes that this will be achieved through hard work and competing together. He also plans to organize team building events to promote team bonding and unity. Motivation is key in pushing the players to reach their highest potential. Coach Wagner encourages players to set individual and team goals, and also focuses on self-improvement to keep them motivated. Competing against the clock and themselves is also a big motivating factor for the team. The biggest challenge in preparing for this season has been the weather and late practice schedule.
