The Fremont High School wrestling team is gearing up for another exciting season, and head coach Daniel McCune is optimistic about their chances. After finishing 5th at CCS for the past two years, the team has set its sights on making it to the podium this year. With a strong group of returning players and promising new talent, the team is ready to hit the mats and give it their all.
We had the chance to sit down with Coach McCune for a preview of what we can expect from the team this season. The team has some top returning players from last season, including Jameson Moore and Davon Walker, who both finished 4th at CCS and are determined to make it to state this year. These talented wrestlers have put in the hard work and dedication to improve their skills and make an impact on the team. Aila Duus and Hannah Ramirez also return after qualifying for state last year and are hoping to make it to the podium this year.
Freshmen Landon Squires, Lillian Fonceca, and Olyvia Carrasco bring new energy and potential to the team. Squires, a middle school county champion, has impressed the coaches with his experience and skills on the mat. Fonceca and Carrasco have also caught the coaches' attention with their determination and potential at the varsity level.
When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach McCune looks for qualities like hard work, leadership, and dedication. He believes that true leaders are not assigned, but rather they are identified through their actions and behavior. While there are no official captains this year, several players, including Squires, Fonceca, and Carrasco, are battling for that role.
Coach McCune stresses the importance of team chemistry and camaraderie. The team spends a lot of time together outside of practice, participating in team-building activities and events. He believes that this helps build trust and unity among the team, ultimately leading to a stronger performance on the mat.
When asked about motivating his players, Coach McCune emphasizes the importance of hard work and dedication. He believes that the reward for putting in the work is success and that there is no maximum limit on how much effort a player can put in. The biggest challenge for the team this season has been finding a permanent training space as their wrestling room was recently torn down.
