As the fall season approaches, the Georgiana Bruce Kirby School cross-country team looks towards their goals of winning the Cypress Division and qualifying as a team for CCS. These goals are fueled by the commitment and hard work of the top returning players from last season. Junior Mason Vergho, senior Wyatt Trigger, and sophomore Hayden Smith are expected to make an immediate impact on the team.
Vergho is known for his impressive work ethic and drive to be the best he can be. Trigger brings a high level of talent to the team, while Smith is described as extremely dedicated and a team captain as a 10th grader. In order to foster a successful team dynamic, head coach Petter Bauer looks for key qualities in potential team captains such as commitment and hard work.
Currently, Max Waydo, a 9th grader coming off a strong middle school career, embodies these qualities and is the team's current captain. However, the rest of the team is also working towards this role. Team chemistry and camaraderie are essential for the team's success, and coach Bauer emphasizes the importance of commitment above all else.
By showing up to practices and giving their best effort, the athletes demonstrate their dedication and contribute to a positive team culture. Along with this, team bonding activities and events like team luncheons also help build connections and boost team morale. To motivate his players to reach their full potential, coach Bauer draws inspiration from the popular TV show character, Ted Lasso.
He believes that having a strong team culture and a shared vision can be a powerful motivator for the team. Additionally, adapting practices and training based on individual needs, both physically and mentally, is a crucial aspect of coaching. As for preparing for the upcoming season, coach Bauer has faced challenges such as adapting to runners' summer schedules and responding to the individual needs of each runner.
However, with his experience and support from new assistant coaches, he is confident in the team's preparation. The team's schedule this season includes tough opponents such as PCS and Oakwood, who always provide stiff competition. However, coach Bauer also notes the sense of community and camaraderie that exists among runners and coaches in these competitive races.
In terms of balancing academics and sports, coach Bauer stresses the importance of establishing routines and finding the balance that works for each individual athlete. He believes that running not only improves one's physical health but also has a positive impact on mental well-being.
