The Hartford Union High School baseball team is gearing up for another exciting season. With a strong core of returning players and some promising new additions, Coach Steve Oleshko and his team have high hopes for the upcoming season. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Oleshko mentioned several key players who will be crucial to the team's success. Leading the pack is senior Carter Kutz, who was the 2024 North Shore Conference Pitcher of the Year and a 4-year varsity starter. With his talent on the mound and ability to play multiple positions, Kutz is a valuable asset to the team. Another standout player is junior Aiden Kolb, who was a 3rd team All-Conference selection and plays shortstop and leads off. His strong baseball instincts and defensive skills make him a key player for the team. Junior centerfielder Kayden Romans, sophomore infielder Brady Helms, senior infielder Joe Landgraf, and senior catcher Ethan Birkel are also expected to make an immediate impact on the team this season. In terms of team captains, Coach Oleshko looks for players who possess high character, have been with the program for multiple years, and have experienced success in previous seasons. This year, the team will have four senior captains who have been starters for the past 3-4 years and have participated in multiple sectional tournaments, a State Tournament, and a conference championship. To build team chemistry and camaraderie, the players themselves take the lead. They genuinely enjoy spending time together and this translates onto the field. Coach Oleshko believes that when players have a strong bond with each other, it helps them push themselves to their full potential. The biggest challenge in preparing for this season has been ensuring that the players are in top shape physically and mentally. Coach Oleshko emphasizes the importance of off-season training and staying game-ready from day one of practice. He also stresses the importance of playing the game the right way and giving it their all for the full three hours of each game. In terms of coaching style, Coach Oleshko maintains his intensity and focus on fundamentals as he has in previous seasons. He believes that staying true to these principles is key to success in the highly competitive North Shore conference. The team is also looking forward to competing against some strong non-conference opponents, including Hartland Arrowhead, Kettle Moraine, and Oconomowoc. For the Hartford Union High School team, the mental aspect of the game is just as important as the physical. Coach Oleshko believes that his team's success is a result of their mental toughness and ability to focus on the process rather than the end result. This mindset has helped them compete in 3 straight sectional tournaments and win a conference championship last season. In terms of training and conditioning, the team will be incorporating a lifting day this season to maintain their strength throughout the season. Coach Oleshko believes in the importance of maintaining physical strength and making sure the players are game-ready at all times. As with any team, the Hartford Union High School baseball team has its strengths and weaknesses. Coach Oleshko believes that their strengths lie in their starting pitching and infield, with all players capable of playing multiple positions. However, the corner outfield positions are still uncertain and the players will have to compete for those spots. Coach Oleshko hopes that the competition will bring out the best in his players and help them improve their weaknesses. Overall, Coach Oleshko's coaching philosophy centers around staying focused on the process and taking each game pitch by pitch. He believes in playing the game the right way and giving it your all for the full three hours. With this mindset and the talent and determination of the players, the Hartford Union High School baseball team is poised for a successful season and a chance at their fourth straight sectional tournament appearance. Fans can look forward to an exciting and competitive season from this team.
