As the new flag football season approaches, the Highland High School team is buzzing with excitement and energy. With a talented roster of returning players and a crop of new standout recruits, Coach David Stowe is confident that this year’s team will make a strong impact on the field. In an exclusive interview with Coach Stowe, we gained insight into the team’s strengths, challenges, and goals for the upcoming season.
One of the team’s biggest strengths this year is their top returning players from last season. Coach Stowe proudly states, “We only lost a couple of key players last season so we simply reloaded.” This speaks to the depth of talent on the team and their ability to maintain a strong core group of players. Their discipline, speed, love for each other, and attention to detail are their keys to success.
These qualities set them apart on the field and will be crucial in taking home the Golden League Championship and a shot at the CIF Title. Joining this strong group of returning players are new recruits who are expected to make an immediate impact on the team. Among them are Kaela Marin (QB), Jayda Thompson (RB), Leiyah Taylor (CB), and Brentley Scott (WR/LB). Coach Stowe has high praises for these girls, calling them “game changers” and highlighting their individual skills such as Marin’s ability to command respect and Thompson’s speed and agility reminiscent of legendary running back Barry Sanders.
When it comes to leadership, Coach Stowe looks for players who possess qualities such as honesty, integrity, and good character. This year’s team captains are Djai Verdun (RB), Ny Airi Davis (LB), Abbigail Gomez (WR), Aubrey Reyes (RB/Slot), and Kaydence Polk (DB/RB/Slot). These girls have proven themselves to be reliable and trustworthy on and off the field, making them great role models for their teammates.
In terms of building team chemistry and camaraderie, Coach Stowe has a unique approach. He believes in taking his team out for team bonding activities, such as their recent trip to the beach, to create a stronger bond among the players. This not only helps them get to know each other better but also serves as a break from the intense training and competition. Motivation is key in pushing players to their full potential. For Coach Stowe, it’s all about creating a competitive and disciplined environment.
