John Marshall High School's volleyball team, under the guidance of Coach Laura-Ashley Maeda, is gearing up for an exciting season filled with aspirations of overcoming past challenges and reaching new heights. With a clear focus on surpassing previous achievements in the CIF-LACS DI City Finals, the team is determined to elevate their game and make a strong push towards success. The team's overarching goal for the season is to break through the barriers that have held them back in the past and make a lasting impact in their league. Whether it's clinching the Division 1 title or making a formidable run in the Open Division, the players are committed to pushing themselves to new limits. Consistency and evolution are identified as the keys to success, with the team emphasizing the need for every player to fulfill their role consistently and adapt to challenges as they arise. Key returning players from last season include three standout captains: Senior Outside Hitter Abraham Talansky, Sophomore Setter Shay Rodriguez, and Senior Outside Hitter Ethan Rodriguez. Abraham's imposing presence on the court, coupled with his offensive prowess and defensive skills, makes him a formidable force. Shay's ability to deceive opponents with his setting and Ethan's versatility and leadership add depth to the team's roster, setting the stage for a successful campaign. Among the new players expected to make an immediate impact is Sophomore Opposite Ryan Salarda, whose exceptional passing, hitting, and blocking abilities make him a valuable asset to the team. With a high volleyball IQ and a relentless work ethic, Ryan's versatility allows him to excel in various positions on the court, adding depth to the team's lineup. Team captains are selected based on their exemplary leadership qualities, commitment to excellence, and ability to maintain focus and positivity during games. Abraham, Ethan, and Shay lead by example both on and off the court, setting the tone for their teammates and embodying the spirit of the Marshall Barristers. To foster team chemistry and camaraderie, Coach Maeda organizes a variety of team bonding activities, including STEM projects, competitive games, and watching college matches together. These activities encourage players to work together towards a common goal and strengthen their bonds beyond the volleyball court. Motivating players to reach their full potential involves setting clear goals and maintaining a positive atmosphere during drills and games. By focusing on goal-oriented drills and celebrating successes, Coach Maeda instills confidence and encourages players to push themselves to new heights. Despite challenges such as limited access to practice facilities, the team remains resilient and focused on their goals. The ongoing rivalry with Eagle Rock HS adds excitement to their Northern League schedule, providing an opportunity to showcase their skills and determination. Coach Maeda's coaching style has evolved to prioritize serve receive and defense, reflecting the team's commitment to excellence in all aspects of the game. With a focus on building a strong mindset and instilling confidence in players, the team is poised for success on and off the court. Communication plays a crucial role in the team's success, with players encouraged to relay important information quickly and effectively during games. Clear and concise communication helps teammates react faster and make smarter plays, giving the team a competitive edge. As the season unfolds, the team's dedication and love for the game will be their greatest strength. With a focus on continuous improvement and a commitment to each other, the Marshall Barristers are ready to make their mark and inspire their fans and supporters throughout the season.
