As the Joplin High School Girls Volleyball team gears up for the 2025 season, Head Coach Emily Killion and her staff are laser-focused on building an offense that can complement their already strong defensive game. After graduating a talented senior class, this season will be a test of resilience, development, and a shift in mentality for the Eagles. Offseason Focus: Strengthening the Offense Last season, Joplin’s defense was its backbone, keeping the team competitive in many matches. However, this offseason, the primary focus has been putting the ball away and developing a more aggressive offensive strategy. The coaching staff is working to fill the gaps left by key graduates and ensure the team can execute under pressure. Camps & Team Bonding The Eagles are set to attend two major summer camps to refine their skills and build chemistry: Joplin Licking Camp (July 14-15) – Webb City Branson Licking Camp (July 27-30) A highlight of their summer training is their annual trip to Silver Dollar City, which serves as a perfect mix of team bonding and relaxation before the season heats up. Key Losses & Roster Changes Joplin suffered a significant loss in experience with six seniors graduating, including: Senior Setter – Broke the school record with over 1,000 career assists. Senior Libero & Defensive Specialist (DS) – Key contributors to last year’s dominant defense. Three Front-Row Attackers/Blockers – Will be tough to replace but provides an opportunity for new players to step up. Filling these roles will be a top priority in the preseason. Players to Watch: Who Will Step Up? Several returning and rising players are expected to make a major impact this season: Lydia Barwick (DS) – A relentless hustler on the floor, vying for the libero spot while also being the team’s most aggressive server. Aubrey Strickland (Middle Blocker) – Named to the Carl Junction All-Tournament team before an injury cut her season short. She’s ready to bounce back stronger. Payton Cunningham & Leighton Pena (Sophomores, Front Row) – Showed flashes of talent last season and are expected to break out as key contributors this year. Coaching Approach: A Year-Round Commitment For Coach Killion and her staff, volleyball is a 365-day passion. They are constantly analyzing film, tweaking drills, and learning from other coaches to gain fresh perspectives. A major emphasis this year will be mental toughness—an often-overlooked part of the game. The coaching staff is committed to helping players develop confidence and a winning mentality. "Joplin volleyball has fallen into the idea that we can't compete or win games. When people tell you something long enough, you start to believe it. We are changing that mindset. Why can't it be us?" – Coach Killion Community Engagement: Giving Back The program strongly believes in community involvement, organizing fundraisers and service projects that allow players to connect with local residents. The team is currently deciding on a community service project, with potential options including: Visiting local nursing homes Volunteering at women’s shelters Helping out at garden centers These activities not only strengthen team unity but also instill a sense of responsibility and gratitude. Challenges & Goals for 2025 The biggest challenge for Joplin this season isn’t just about replacing key players—it’s about shifting the mindset of the program. Overcoming self-doubt – The belief that Joplin can’t compete is being replaced with the attitude: “Why NOT us?” Developing offensive firepower – Turning strong defensive play into scoring opportunities. Staying healthy & resilient – Keeping players in peak condition for a long, demanding season. If the Eagles can embrace their strengths, build confidence, and execute their new offensive strategies, this season could be the turning point for Joplin Volleyball. With a renewed mindset, rising talent, and a coaching staff that never stops working, the Eagles are ready to prove they belong. Get ready for an exciting 2025 season!
