Team Battles Through Adversity The 2024–2025 season was a challenging one for the Kell High School Girls Wrestling team, led by Head Coach Tyna Partin. What began as a promising campaign with 11 athletes quickly turned into a test of resilience, as injuries and mental health challenges reduced the active roster to just three wrestlers by season’s end. Breakout Performance from First-Year Standout Despite the adversity, Saundra Layne emerged as a breakout star. A first-year wrestler, Saundra not only adapted quickly to the sport but excelled, earning a coveted spot at sectionals. “Saundra was our star this year,” said Coach Partin. “She’s a solid athlete who stepped up and gave us something to rally around.” A Turning Point Amid the Struggles The defining moment of the season came when Saundra advanced to sectionals—an achievement that served as a beacon of hope during a tough year. It was a much-needed boost for a team that had endured more than its fair share of setbacks. Mental Strength Over Physical Numbers With the team shrinking due to injuries and interpersonal challenges, Coach Partin praised those who stuck it out. “We had some tough personality and mental conflicts within the team,” she said. “But the solid athletes dug deep and finished.” Looking to Rebuild While the season didn’t produce a championship run, the lessons in mental fortitude, perseverance, and growth were invaluable. The focus now shifts to the offseason, where the priority will be building a stronger, more unified team culture and developing fundamentals to elevate the program. A Glimpse Into the Future With rising stars like Saundra Layne returning, there’s optimism that Kell Girls Wrestling will come back stronger and more focused next year. The building blocks are there—now it's time to lay the foundation.
