As the spring season approaches, the Lakeland High School baseball team is gearing up for another exciting year on the field. With a strong core of returning players and some promising new additions, the team is looking to build upon their past successes and make a deep run into the playoffs. I had the chance to sit down with head coach Aaron Bell to discuss his thoughts on the team's potential for the upcoming season. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Bell was quick to highlight the talent and dedication of his players. "Our goal is to be playing better at the end of the season than we were at the beginning," he said. "The keys to achieving that are player buy-in to that message and players finding ways to improve every practice." This focus on continuous improvement is a testament to the team's work ethic and determination. One of the players who will be instrumental in the team's success this year is senior Jackson Miller. A Bowling Green State University commit, Miller is a key member of the pitching staff and brings a wealth of experience to the mound. Another standout player is Nate Sanko, a senior committed to Spring Arbor University. Both Miller and Sanko are expected to lead the pitching staff and set the tone for the team on the field. In addition to the talented pitching staff, the team also boasts a strong group of returning position players. Coach Bell noted that six players who started last season will be returning, providing a solid foundation for the team. Among these players are Boden Bishop, who started in center field last year, and Ethan Yen, who played shortstop and served as the team's closer. Infielders Cam Chinavare, Carter Travis, and Blake Loisel, along with outfielder Adam Trzcinski, also started and made a significant impact on the field. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Bell looks for players who possess certain qualities and are willing to take on a leadership role. "We want players who are dedicated, hardworking, and have a strong sense of responsibility," he explained. "These are the players who will set a positive example for their teammates and help drive the team forward." As for who will be leading the team this season, Coach Bell mentioned that Miller and Sanko are both strong candidates for the role. Preparing for a new season always comes with its own set of challenges, and this year is no different for the Lakeland High School baseball team. Coach Bell emphasized the importance of staying healthy and avoiding injuries, particularly for players who are also involved in other sports. "We have a couple of players who have suffered significant injuries from other sports, so we are looking forward to them getting healthy soon and joining the team," he said. The team's schedule for this season is a mix of tough opponents and exciting matchups. Coach Bell mentioned that the league they play in presents its own set of challenges due to the natural rivalries that exist. However, the team is also set to face off against several top-ranked teams in their non-conference schedule. Teams such as Hartland, Grand Blanc, Rochester Adams, Detroit Catholic Central, Edison, Bay City Western, Mattawan, Jenison, Cass Tech, and Salem will all provide tough competition for the Lakeland Eagles. When asked about any changes in his coaching style for this season, Coach Bell noted that he always strives to adapt and evolve as a coach to better serve his players. "I am always looking for new ways to motivate my players and help them reach their full potential," he said. "But ultimately, my coaching style is centered around creating a positive and supportive environment for the players to thrive in." As the Lakeland High School baseball team prepares for the upcoming season, it is clear that they have all the necessary components to achieve success. With a strong core of returning players, talented newcomers, and a dedicated coaching staff, the team is poised to make a run toward the playoffs. The Eagles are ready to hit the field and showcase their skills, and with their hard work and determination, they are sure to make their school and community proud.
