In just a few short years, Mahomet-Seymour Girls Wrestling has grown from a one-wrestler squad into a gritty, united team of nine—and if this season is any indication, the program’s future is looking bright. Under the guidance of Head Coach Jeff Castor, the Bulldogs battled through early inexperience to achieve several milestones, including five sectional qualifiers, one IHSA state qualifier, and two podium finishes at the IWCOA State Tournament. Leadership, Resilience, and Rapid Growth This season, the anchor of the team was returning wrestler and team captain Lily Daniels, who provided steady leadership and experience for a young squad made up mostly of first-time competitors and freshmen. Freshman Jaycee Weitekamp made waves by qualifying for State, setting the tone for what this emerging program is capable of. Two standouts in particular showed impressive development: Madilyn Becker, a junior with no prior experience, fought her way to a podium finish at the IWCOA State Tournament and is now active in offseason tournaments in preparation for a senior-year state run. Siera Tuttle, a freshman with minimal junior high experience, also placed at IWCOA State and is committed to offseason work heading into her sophomore year. Turning Points and Team Culture A major highlight of the season was seeing several wrestlers redeem early-season losses by defeating the same opponents later in the year—a clear marker of growth, grit, and mental toughness. Losses and pressure situations were met not just with determination but with something even more powerful: team unity. “They were there for each other,” said Coach Castor. “That bond was paramount to their success.” Building a Program with Purpose Though the team had no seniors this year, the impact of this young core is already being felt. “We started the year green, but finished strong,” said Castor. “From one girl to five, and now nine—it’s only growing from here.” The Bulldogs expect to return most of their current roster and will add six incoming junior high athletes, along with some returning athletes from prior seasons. With double-digit participation on the horizon, Mahomet-Seymour is fast becoming a program to watch in Illinois girls wrestling. Offseason Focus The team’s offseason goals are centered on strength training, technical development, and building even greater chemistry through summer camp and tournaments.
