As the spring season approaches, excitement is building for the baseball team at Maize South High School. With a core group of experienced players, a strong team bond, and a challenging schedule, the team has set their sights on being competitive in every game and making a run for the state tournament. I had the opportunity to sit down with Coach Admin Admin to get a preview of the upcoming season, discuss team goals, and learn about the players who will be leading the way for the Mavericks. When asked about the team's overall goals for the season, Coach Admin shared, "We want to be competitive in every game and give ourselves a chance to win. We have some specific goals, such as throwing first pitch strikes 70% of the time, winning two of the first three pitches we pitch, limiting our defensive errors to two or fewer, and having 60% of our at-bats be quality ABs. These goals will help set us up for success in each game." Leading the team this year will be a group of talented and experienced players. Coach Admin highlighted a few key returners who will play a crucial role in the team's success. "Hunter Higgins, our catcher, was named 2nd Team 5A All-State last year. He's a solid player on both offense and defense. We also have Jack Martens, Jaxon Sullivan, Tate McNew, Brock Ellis, and Brody Epke, all of whom received AVCTL DIV 1 awards. These guys have been leaders on the team and we expect big things from them this year. We also have seven seniors who are a cohesive unit and have a goal of returning to the state tournament at WSU." One of the team's strengths lies in the strong bond among the players. As Coach Admin explained, "We have a close-knit group of players who genuinely enjoy playing with each other. This camaraderie translates onto the field, and it's something we hope to capitalize on this season." That doesn't mean the team isn't open to new players making an impact. In fact, Coach Admin hopes that some of the new players will be able to contribute in important ways. "We are always looking for guys who can have an impact and fill certain roles on the team. We want players who others want to play with, who can rally the team when things aren't going our way.
