Making Waves Academy is a public charter school located in Richmond, California. The school, established in 2007, aims to provide a high-quality education to underserved communities in the Bay Area. Along with academic excellence, the school also emphasizes on character development and leadership skills. With a strong focus on sports and physical education, the students at Making Waves Academy have excelled in various sports, including basketball. We had the opportunity to talk to Coach George Phillips about the basketball team at Making Waves Academy and the upcoming season. Q: How would you describe the team's performance last year? A: Last year was a great learning experience for our team. We had a young team with some new players, and it took us a while to find our rhythm. But once we did, we had a successful season. The team finished with a record of 17-7 and made it to the division playoffs, which was a significant accomplishment for us. We had some standout players who contributed to our success, and we hope to build on that this year. Q: What were some of the challenges the team faced last year? A: The main challenge for us was team chemistry. We had players coming from different backgrounds and schools, and it took some time for everyone to get to know each other and play as a team. But the boys were determined to improve, and we had several team-building activities and practices to help them bond. Another challenge we faced was our lack of experience in high-pressure situations. We played well in most games, but in some close ones, we struggled to handle the pressure. However, these challenges have also helped us grow and prepare for this season. Q: How has the team prepared for the upcoming season? A: The team has been working hard during the off-season, attending summer camps and tournaments to improve their skills. We also had regular practices, and the boys were committed to improving individually, and as a team. We have a mix of returning players and new additions, so we focused on building team chemistry and incorporating new players into our system. We also addressed our weaknesses from last season and worked on strategies to handle pressure situations better. Q: Who are the key players to watch out for this year? A: Our team has some talented players, but a few stand out. Our captain, John Smith, is a senior and has been a key player for us since his sophomore year.
