As Coach Andrew Bynum prepares for the upcoming season at Marina High School, he has clear goals in mind for his team. The top priority for him is to continue improving on the previous season's record and aim to win the league. To achieve this, he emphasizes execution, control, energy, focus, and grit. These key factors play a crucial role in the team's success and will be the driving force behind their gameplay.
The coach takes pride in the returning players from last season who have proven themselves to be valuable assets. Nick Murrey, a junior, is a two-way player with experience both on the mound and with the bat. He has the ability to throw all pitches for strikes and has shown impressive skills with a fastball up to 88 mph in the Fall.
Another junior, Tate Morris, has also been up to 88 mph in the Fall and has had a successful summer and fall season. He is a leader on the team with a "bulldog mentality" and continues to grow as a player. Josh Mizoguchi, a senior who earned 2nd team all-league, is currently competing in CIF basketball but is expected to have a significant impact on the team's performance once he joins the lineup.
Senior catcher Cash Thompson, who earned 2nd team all-league, will continue to lead the team behind the plate and control the pitching staff. He is known for his bat-to-ball skills, which will be vital for the team's offense. Quinn Hartman, a senior who has committed to CalTech for baseball and soccer, will have a major impact on the team with his excellent outfield coverage and improved batting skills.
Coach Bynum expects new players to make an immediate impact on the team as well. Liam Haynes, a sophomore, has shown potential on the mound and is solid in his glove and at-bats. He will have the opportunity to showcase his skills both on the mound and in the field. Logan Thurman, a senior, had to play JV last season due to a transfer from Kennedy High School but is expected to provide an added punch to the team's lineup.
When it comes to choosing team captains, the coach looks for qualities such as leading by example, confidence, vocal, determination, and being another coach on the field. These players are expected to retain the knowledge provided and apply it to the best of their ability, adjust when needed, and maintain a positive attitude.
