As the new season approaches, fans of Miami Trace High School's baseball team are eagerly anticipating what the team has to offer. To get a glimpse into what the team has in store, we spoke with Coach Rob Smith about the upcoming season. Coach Smith has been with the team for several years and has a deep understanding of the players and their potential. In this article, we will dive into the team's top returning players, new additions, team captains, and the challenges and goals for this season. Coach Smith believes that the team has a strong group of returning players that will be crucial to their success this season. Among them is senior Gaige Stuckey, an Ohio University signee who plays left-handed pitcher and outfielder. "Gaige is a versatile player who brings a lot of experience and leadership to the team," says Coach Smith. "He has a great work ethic and is always willing to put in the extra effort to improve his game." Junior Cooper Enochs is another standout player who was named to the All-Ohio 1st team last season. Enochs is an outfielder known for his speed and impressive defensive skills. "Cooper is a key player for us, both on and off the field," says Coach Smith. "He is a natural leader and his determination to win is contagious." Other top returning players include junior Austin Brown at catcher, junior Cam Morton as a pitcher and first baseman, sophomore Brody McBee at second base, senior Evan Colegrove at third base, junior Jameson Hyer in center field, and senior Xavier Lawhorn as a right-handed pitcher and outfielder. These players have shown their talent and dedication in the previous season and are expected to continue to perform at a high level. The team also has some new faces that Coach Smith believes will make an immediate impact. These include senior Keenan Moore in the outfield, sophomore Gage Henry as a right-handed pitcher, freshman Gage Bowers at shortstop, and sophomore Kenton Berry as a utility player. "Keenan, Gage, Gage, and Kenton all bring something unique to the team," says Coach Smith. "They have impressed us with their skills and we are excited to see how they will contribute this season." When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Smith looks for players who possess certain qualities. "We want someone who can lead by example, who is always willing to put in the work, and who has the respect of their teammates," he explains. This year, the team has several players who are either already captains or are in the running for the role. These include junior Keenan Moore, sophomore Gage Henry, freshman Gage Bowers, and sophomore Kenton Berry. With a mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen, the team's leadership is well-balanced. Building team chemistry and camaraderie is crucial for any successful team. Coach Smith believes that hard work and team-building activities are key to achieving this. "We have a great group of players who are all committed to working hard and supporting each other," he says. "We also plan to have team-building activities throughout the season to further strengthen our bond." As a coach, motivating players to reach their full potential is a top priority for Coach Smith. "We have a lot of talented players on the team, and our goal is to put them in a position to succeed and boost their confidence," he says. This involves understanding each player's strengths and weaknesses and helping them improve in areas they need to work on. Additionally, Coach Smith believes in creating a positive and supportive environment that encourages players to push themselves to be the best they can be. The biggest challenge the team has faced in preparing for this season has been the weather. "We have had a lot of rain and cold temperatures, which has limited our practice time and caused some games to be rescheduled," says Coach Smith. However, the team has been making the most of their time on the field, and Coach Smith is confident that they will be ready for the season opener. The team's schedule includes some tough opponents in their league, such as Jackson, Washington Court House, Chillicothe, McClain, and Hillsboro. Additionally, they have several challenging non-league games lined up. "We have a difficult schedule, but we are looking forward to the competition," says Coach Smith. "It will only make us better as a team." Coach Smith's coaching style this season will differ from previous years due to the team's schedule. "We have a challenging league schedule, so we will be focusing on playing good defense and adapting our offensive style to our talent," he explains. The team will also be utilizing different strategies and techniques to prepare for their tough opponents. While the team's coaching staff emphasizes discipline, good defense, and team speed, they also understand the importance of the mental aspect of the game. "Baseball is a mental game, and our coaching philosophy reflects that," says Coach Smith. "We work on building our players' mental toughness and resilience, as well as their physical abilities." The team has been incorporating daily mental activities into their training program to help players stay sharp and focused. In addition, they have been focusing on strength training and speed drills to improve their overall fitness and performance. "We believe that a well-rounded training and conditioning program is essential for our players to excel on the field," says Coach Smith. According to Coach Smith, the team's strengths lie in their strong group of returning players, their speed, and their willingness to put in the work. However, he also acknowledges that there are areas that need improvement. "We will be working on our hitting and pitching to become more well-rounded as a team," he says. "We have a lot of potential, and our goal is to continue to build on our strengths and improve on our weaknesses throughout the season." In conclusion, Coach Smith and the Miami Trace High School baseball team are ready to compete for a league title and make a tournament run. With a mix of experienced players and new additions, strong team chemistry, and a focused training program, the team is well-equipped to face the challenges of the upcoming season. As fans, we can't wait to see what the team will achieve this year.
