The Monte Vista Christian School cross country team is gearing up for an exciting and competitive season. Led by coach Erik Beckmen, the team is hoping to achieve their goals of winning league, placing in the top three at CCS, and advancing to the State Championship. With a combination of returning players and new talent, the team is ready to face any challenge that comes their way.
In terms of returning players, the team is lucky to have strong and dedicated individuals leading the way. The boys' varsity team boasts returning players Gavin Beckmen, Conor Gilliam, Justin McCullick, Bradley Orlando, and Eli Kieft. These athletes have not only shown improvement in their running abilities, but also possess leadership qualities that make them stand out on the team.
Gavin Beckmen has been on the varsity squad since he was a freshman and has consistently improved in all distances. Conor Gilliam is known for his competitive edge and pushes his teammates to be better. Justin McCullick is a consistent and reliable runner, and Bradley Orlando is recognized for his immense heart and amazing kick.
Eli Kieft is another consistent runner who has shown growth throughout his high school career. On the girls' varsity team, Kylie Brunelli stands out as a four-year varsity runner who has made it to the State Championship two years in a row. She is known for leaving everything on the course with her strong running abilities. Alongside her is Finley Castro, a sophomore with great potential.
Castro missed advancing to the State Championship as a freshman by a small margin and is eager to make a strong impact this year. In addition to these returning players, there are also a few new members of the team who are expected to make an immediate impact. freshman Anna Conca is a strong runner who is already challenging Brunelli for the number one spot on the team.
With her competitive spirit and potential, Conca is a valuable addition to the team. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Beckmen looks for athletes who possess qualities such as leadership, motivation, and team mentality. For the boys' team, there are three players battling for the captain spot, each capable of leading the team.
On the other hand, Kylie Brunelli is the captain for the girls' team, known for her ability to motivate, lead, and mentor her teammates. Team chemistry and camaraderie are essential components for a successful and cohesive team.
