It's that time of year again when high school sports are in full swing and teams are gearing up for their upcoming seasons. One team in particular, the Mountain View High School lacrosse team, has set their sights high and is determined to have a successful season. To learn more about the team and their goals, we talked to Coach Andrew Beattie. When asked about his goals for the season, Coach Beattie wasted no time in stating that their main objective is to be back-to-back league champions and to go deep into the playoffs. These are certainly ambitious goals, but Coach Beattie strongly believes that they can achieve them by playing "nitty gritty Mountain View lacrosse." He emphasizes the importance of playing as a team and for each other, rather than for individual success. Leading the way for the team will be their four captains: Diego Ortega, Gabriel Gallentine, Nicholas Guindi, and Ryan Pacheco. When selecting captains, Coach Beattie looks for players who possess qualities such as dedication, hard work, communication, and a team-first attitude. These four individuals exemplify these qualities and will be instrumental in leading the team to success this season. In order to strengthen team camaraderie, Coach Beattie has planned team bonding dinners before major games and designated Fridays as a "fun day" where the team can relax and bond outside of practice. These activities not only bring the team closer together, but also allow them to have a balance between hard work and fun. When it comes to motivation, Coach Beattie believes in creating drills and activities that will not only improve the team's skills, but also make the game fun. He also encourages self-reflection, challenging his players to strive for their best and be able to look themselves in the mirror at night, knowing they gave their all on the field. However, preparing for the upcoming season does not come without its challenges. Coach Beattie highlights the importance of ensuring the entire team is present to gather the necessary knowledge for the season. He also emphasizes the need for a good balance between school, sports, and personal life to ensure the team remains eligible throughout the season. Looking at the team's schedule, it's clear that they will face some tough competition. But Coach Beattie sees this as an opportunity for his team to test their mental toughness and overcome adversity.
