The 2021-2022 season for the Mt Bethel Christian Academy Eagles is gearing up to be a competitive and exciting one, as the team faces some tough challenges in the GHSA Region 5, Class Single A D1. But, as Coach Pete Gonzalez shares, the team is ready to tackle those obstacles head on and continue their legacy of success. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Gonzalez didn't hesitate to say that all of them possess incredible talent and dedication.
However, there are a few that stand out. Senior Tej Efemini, Junior PG Nate Robinson, and Sophomore Wings Trumane Watkins and Roman Avery all played significant roles in last season's success and are expected to continue their impact on the court this year. Despite being a smaller school, the Eagles have proven time and time again that they can compete with larger schools.
In fact, in the 10 years of their program, they have already achieved two State Championships, two Final Four appearances, and eight State Tournament appearances. This success is also reflected in the many players who have gone on to play at the college level and achieved individual accolades such as All-State and All-Region recognition. As for new players making an immediate impact on the team, senior forward Bony Shindani and freshman center Peter Julius are expected to have a significant presence on the court.
Julius, in particular, comes with an impressive resume after leading his 15U Nike EYBL team to a Peach Jam championship over the summer. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Gonzalez looks for players who lead by example, inspire their teammates, and are willing to do the little things that contribute to the team's success. The final decision will be made after the team's annual weekend spiritual retreat, where player feedback and participation will play a vital role.
The team's schedule will not be an easy one, as they will face tough opponents like 5A Johns Creek and Alpharetta, 3A #6 Pickens County, and Tennessee powerhouse McCallie. They will also participate in the Battle of the Villages tournament in Orlando, where they will face seven nationally ranked-teams. The team's youth may be a challenge, but Coach Gonzalez and his players are ready to embrace it and use it as a way to constantly improve and grow.
