The top returning players from last season for Oakleaf High School’s track and field team are Devin Collins, Rayna Lawson, and Josber Stimphil. These three athletes have already proven themselves as top performers and are expected to continue their success this season. Devin Collins, a freshman, was a 4A state finalist last year, with impressive personal bests of 10.63 seconds in the 100m and 7.32m in the long jump. What sets Devin apart is his relentless work ethic both on and off the track. He excels academically, with a 3.5+ GPA and high test scores, making him a well-rounded student-athlete. This season, he has already tied for the #3 spot in the long jump rankings with a jump of 6.84m, despite only competing in one meet so far. Rayna Lawson, also a freshman, is poised for a breakout year after a strong offseason. A naturally gifted sprinter, she is currently ranked 25th in Florida in the 60m and 36th in the 200m, according to FL MileSplit. With plenty of room to grow, Rayna is expected to make even bigger performances this season. Josber Stimphil, a sophomore, is a dedicated and naturally gifted sprinter with personal bests of 49.1 seconds in the 400m and 21.97 seconds in the 200m. His relentless work ethic sets him apart from others, and he is currently tied for the #10 spot in the long jump rankings for the indoor season. The team's overall goal is to keep improving and pushing for personal bests. Coach Juba McCray's main focus is on developing a culture where personal records (PRs) are the standard, not the exception. He wants to see every athlete on the team reach their full potential and compete at the highest level. This season, the team is aiming to get as many athletes as possible to the state meet. It's all about growth, competition, and ensuring each athlete reaches their full potential. In terms of new players who will make an immediate impact, Coach McCray has his eye on a few standout athletes. Devin Collins, Rayna Lawson, and Josber Stimphil lead the pack with their impressive performances and work ethic. However, there are a few other rookies who are also expected to make an impact this season. Devin Collins (Class of 2025) is a standout short sprinter and jumper, making him a strong addition to the team. Rayna Lawson (Class of 2026) has already started making her mark with impressive performances in the 60m and 200m. Josber Stimphil (Class of 2025) is a dedicated and naturally gifted sprinter who is currently tied for the #10 spot in the long jump rankings for the indoor season. When it comes to team captains, Coach McCray looks for qualities such as leadership, determination, and a strong work ethic. Jordin Price and Fareed Coleman are two players who stand out as potential team captains. Both are two-way standouts on the football team and have shown impressive speed, toughness, and competitiveness on the field, making them immediate impact players on the track as well. Another potential captain is Luke Janke, a talented three-sport athlete who has already shown tremendous potential. As a freshman, Luke's 2:07 personal record (PR) in the 800m shows his ability and drive to become an exceptional athlete by his senior year. Preparing for this season has had its challenges, but Coach McCray has been impressed with the team's drive and determination. The biggest challenge is managing the competitive nature of the team. They all want to be the best, which is great, but it's about finding the balance between competing against each other and pushing each other to improve as a team. The team's schedule for this season is filled with tough opponents and games that they are looking forward to. However, the biggest challenge for the team is competing against themselves. Each athlete has the drive to be the best, and they are constantly pushing themselves and each other to reach new heights. This internal competition is both a challenge and a motivation for the team. Overall, Coach McCray is excited about the potential of this year's team. With a strong group of returning athletes and promising newcomers, the team is on track to achieve their goals of personal growth, competition, and reaching their full potential. With the leadership of potential captains and a strong work ethic, the Oakleaf High School track and field team is sure to make a mark this season.
