The 2024-25 girls' soccer season at Patrick Henry High School wasn't just successful—it was historic. Under the leadership of Head Coach Jason Renfro, the Patriots delivered a record-breaking year that culminated in the school’s first-ever State Championship in any sport since its founding in 1968.
Key Contributors & Standouts
Senior Naima Castro, the team's captain, embodied leadership both on and off the field. “She was my voice and shared the same vision for what we were trying to accomplish,” said Coach Renfro. Her relentless play and motivational presence made her the emotional engine of the team.
Fellow seniors Briahna Gieger and Kathryn Mokhov also played pivotal roles—Briahna with her combination of size, skill, and grit, and Kathryn with her playoff heroics, particularly her knack for scoring off throws and crosses.
Junior goalkeeper Zoe Claisse came up big in crunch time, solidifying her role late in the season and making key saves in their playoff run. Junior defenders Abby Weiss and Elizabeth Barefoot were central to the team’s defensive strength, with Lizzy also contributing offensively with her powerful long throws.
Contributions also came from juniors Breanna Ivie and Zoe Wehrman, who played critical utility roles across the pitch, and standout sophomores Emma Cunningham and Jasmine Singletary, who displayed talent and growth that bode well for the future.
Season Overview & Historic Achievements
After finishing third in league play behind Cathedral Catholic and Our Lady of Peace, the Patriots entered the CIF San Diego Section Division I playoffs as the #1 seed and swept their way to the championship.
But the journey didn’t end there. In the California State Regional Division 3 playoffs, Patrick Henry put together a dominant run, outscoring opponents 12-0 across three games to capture the first state title in school history.
Turning Points & Growth
A major shift came midseason when the coaching staff implemented a new formation. As the players grew comfortable with it, chemistry and individual strengths began to shine. “From tryouts to tournaments to playoffs—this group bought in and made history,” Renfro shared.
Emerging talents like Jasmine Singletary and Zoe Wehrman grew into new roles as the team adapted, underscoring the depth and versatility of the squad.
Responding to Adversity
Early setbacks challenged the team’s confidence, but Coach Renfro credits a series of heartfelt team talks and motivational speeches for uniting the group. “Whether it was real or not, it worked—the team believed in one another,” he said.
Senior Impact
This senior class left an undeniable legacy, contributing experience, passion, and leadership that will shape the program for years to come.
Looking Ahead
With a large offensive core graduating, the team will reset and focus on rebuilding its attack while leaning on a strong returning defense and midfield, including three senior goalkeepers. Coach Renfro remains grounded yet optimistic: “We have to mentor the new athletes and continue to do things the Patriot way.”
