Coach Wes Swain of Ravenswood High School has a lot on his plate this year as he prepares his young team for the upcoming baseball season. With only two seniors and one junior on the team, the focus will be on teaching and developing the skills of his players at a higher level. The team is also facing the challenge of adjusting to a new coach, as Swain takes over the helm after the departure of longtime coach, Mickey Swisher. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Swain had a clear answer. "Evan Swain, Noah Dawson, Cooper Anderson, and Evan Hickman are our top returners," he said. "They have shown great potential and leadership on the field. They are also versatile players, which makes them special." In terms of new players, Swain is excited about the impact they will make on the team. "Brooks Wolfe, Lucas Pursley, Joe Casto, Ralphie Rhodes, and Isiah Nesselroad will all make an immediate impact on the team," he said. "They have all shown great potential and have been working hard during the off-season." When it comes to team captains, Coach Swain looks for players who have been in the program for at least three years and have shown strong leadership qualities. "Evan Swain and Noah Dawson will be our captains this year," he said. "They have been great role models for the younger players and I have no doubt they will continue to lead the team in the right direction." Team chemistry and camaraderie are crucial for any successful team, and Coach Swain has a plan to build it within his young squad. "Many of these kids are friends on and off the field, which is a great starting point," he said. "They have also played other sports together, so they already have a good understanding of each other's strengths and weaknesses. We will also have team-building activities throughout the season to strengthen our bond." Motivation can be a challenge, especially with a young team. Coach Swain looks to his players to push each other and set an example for the rest of the team. "Having a small roster means there is not much competition for playing time, but I believe players like Evan Swain will motivate others to work hard and push themselves to their full potential," he said. The biggest challenge for Coach Swain this season will be getting his young players up to speed with the demands of varsity-level baseball. "Many of these freshmen have not played at this level before, so it will be a learning curve for them," he said. "Our main focus will be on teaching and developing their skills throughout the season." This year's schedule includes tough opponents such as Buffalo, South Charleston, Man, Wahama, Wirt, and South Harrison. Despite the challenges, Coach Swain is looking forward to the competition. "It will be a great opportunity for our young team to face some strong teams and see where we stand," he said. As a new coach, Coach Swain's coaching style may differ from previous years. However, he plans to continue the strength program that has been in place for several years. "We have a good strength program in place, but it's up to the players to show up and put in the work," he said. The mental aspect of the game is something that Coach Swain believes is crucial for success on the field. "Baseball is a mentally challenging sport, and many players underestimate its importance," he said. "With a young team, I expect there will be some struggles, but it's important for them to understand the mental aspect of the game and how it can affect their performance." The team's strengths lie in their speed and the potential of some of their pitchers. However, being a young team, they also have weaknesses that need to be addressed. "We need to work on building our pitching staff and improving our overall game knowledge and understanding," said Coach Swain. "We will focus on these areas during practice and continue to develop our players throughout the season." When it comes to his coaching philosophy, Coach Swain believes in focusing on the fundamentals and teaching players to play the game the right way. "I want my players to be disciplined and have a strong work ethic," he said. "I also want them to have fun and enjoy the game while playing with integrity and respect for their opponents." In conclusion, Coach Swain and his young team at Ravenswood High School have a challenging but exciting season ahead of them. They will be focusing on teaching and developing their skills while also building team chemistry and camaraderie. With strong leadership from their top returners and the addition of new players, the team has the potential to surprise their opponents and have a successful season.
