The Sage Creek High School girls’ lacrosse team is gearing up for another exciting season, and this year they have high hopes for success. We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Bob Meder about the team and their goals for the upcoming year. Coach Meder shared that this season, the team’s goals are to improve every day, compete for the league championship, and strive for a DII CIF championship. These are ambitious objectives, but Coach Meder believes that with hard work and dedication, the team can achieve them. The keys to success, according to Coach Meder, will be gaining the girls’ confidence as the new coach at Sage Creek and getting them to be fully committed to the team this season. When asked about the key players on the team, Coach Meder highlighted Izzy Welken, Briana Fuller, and Sofia Pascua. Izzy is the top attacker and will play a crucial role in scoring goals for the team. Briana is the center midfielder and is expected to win draws for the team, while also excelling in other areas of the game. Coach Meder also praised Sofia as the team’s best defensive player who has the ability to contribute on the offensive side of the field as well. One standout newcomer to the team is Chloe Barrett, a highly talented freshman who has been selected for the All American tournament this summer. Coach Meder described Chloe as a speedy player with great stick-handling abilities, making her a valuable addition to the team. When it comes to leadership, Coach Meder stressed the importance of the team captains. He believes that a captain should be an extension of the coaching staff, helping to keep their fellow players motivated and also providing support to younger players who may need help. To prepare for the season, the team has already started their winter strength and conditioning program. They will also have Monday meetings between players where they will work on problem-solving exercises together. As the season progresses, there will be team building outings and team dinners to strengthen team cohesion and camaraderie. Having taken five years off from coaching, Coach Meder is feeling refreshed and eager to lead the team this season. He believes that his coaching style will adapt to fit the dynamics of the team. When asked about rivalries, Coach Meder pointed out the team’s longstanding rivalry with Carlsbad. However, he emphasized the importance of treating every game with the same intensity and effort, in order to improve throughout the season.
