The Saint Francis High School basketball team is gearing up for an exciting and highly anticipated season. After a successful year last season, the team is looking to build on their accomplishments and take their game to the next level. We had the opportunity to sit down with Coach Daryl Armstrong to get a preview of the team and what fans can expect to see this year.
Coach Armstrong is no stranger to success, having led the Saint Francis High School basketball team to multiple region championships and a state title. When asked about the team's goals for this season, Coach Armstrong emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, winning their region championship, and ultimately bringing home another state title.
He stressed the importance of the entire team buying into the system and playing selfless basketball. As the season approaches, the top returning players from last season include seniors Greg Howard, Reynolds Escher, and Bryce Browne, as well as junior Deniz Ozbeck.
Each of these players brings a unique skill set to the team, with Howard's sharpshooting, Escher's high motor, Browne's physicality, and Ozbeck's three-point shooting. They have all shown great potential and their dedication to the game has earned them their spot as key players on the team. In addition to the returning players, Coach Armstrong also highlighted several new players who are expected to make an immediate impact on the team.
Senior guard Greg Howard, who has been named to the all-region team twice, is known for his shooting abilities and strong defensive skills. Senior forward Reynolds Escher is described as a versatile player with a high motor, and he has already demonstrated his ability to record triple-doubles on multiple occasions. Senior guard Bryce Browne brings a physical presence to the court and is a strong defender.
Junior Deniz Ozbeck provides three-point shooting and has the potential to make a significant impact on the team's offense. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Armstrong looks for players who possess key qualities such as leadership, accountability, and dedication. This season's team captains are Charlie Tummings, Jaylin Sammuels, Moody Simoni, and Asher Vollrath.
These players have shown exceptional leadership qualities and have been pivotal in motivating their teammates to strive for success on and off the court. When it comes to motivating his players to push themselves to their full potential, Coach Armstrong believes in demanding of accountability. The team is constantly reminded of their responsibility to not only their teammates but also the coaching staff and the school.
