As the new school year begins, there is a sense of excitement and anticipation building at Santa Fe High School. For the students, it's a chance to reconnect with friends, start new classes, and participate in extracurricular activities. But for the school's sports teams, particularly the girls' volleyball team, it's the start of a new season filled with potential and high expectations. We had the opportunity to sit down with Coach Gay Brokenbough to get a preview of what's in store for the team this year. A former collegiate volleyball player and Santa Fe High School alumna, Coach Brokenbough has been coaching at the school for 10 years. Under her guidance, the girls' volleyball team has seen great success, with multiple district championships and state tournament appearances. Q: What are your overall thoughts on the team this year? A: I am very excited about this year's team. We have a great mix of experienced seniors and talented underclassmen. Our returning players have shown great improvement over the summer and our new players are adapting quickly to the team's style of play. I have high expectations for this group. Q: How has the team been preparing for the upcoming season? A: We have been training hard all summer. Our returning players have been working on improving their skills and conditioning. We also attended a team camp where we were able to play against some of the top teams in the state. This gave us a chance to see where we stand and what areas we need to focus on. Our new players have also been practicing with us since the beginning of summer, which has helped them get acclimated to our system. Q: What strengths do you see in this year's team? A: Our team chemistry is definitely a strength. The girls have been playing together for a few years now and they have developed great communication and trust on the court. We also have a strong defense, with players who are quick and agile, making it difficult for opponents to score. Additionally, we have strong hitters and setters, which will make us a versatile and well-rounded team. Q: Are there any weaknesses you see that the team will need to work on? A: As with any team, there is always room for improvement. We will need to work on our consistency and mental toughness.
