The 2024–25 Scobey Spartans proved that grit, depth, and a relentless team-first mentality can carry you far, even when adversity strikes. Led by Head Coach Jedd Lekvold, the Spartans finished the year with a 20-9 record and a 4th-place finish at the Montana Class C State Tournament, capping off a remarkable season that showcased resilience, development, and postseason toughness.
Key Contributors
Kaytie Aanstad (Senior) – The lone senior and cornerstone post player. Her inside presence drew defensive attention, opening up the floor for perimeter shooters. A consistent rebounder and leader whose impact will be missed next year.
Camrie Holum (Junior) – The team's most versatile athlete, capable of posting up or handling the ball. A strong defender who could guard any position and contributed heavily in all areas.
Kayla Carney (Sophomore) – A steady, composed guard who handled pressure, ran the offense, and locked down opposing top scorers on defense.
Season Summary: A Resilient Journey
The season began slowly due to a string of injuries that persisted into postseason play. But those injuries gave way to opportunities, and the Spartans took full advantage.
The team gelled at just the right time, winning the district championship, and though they lost in the divisional final, they bounced back to win a divisional challenge game and advance to the state tournament. At state, they went 2-2, picking up a first-round win, reaching the consolation final, and securing a proud 4th-place finish.
Despite never being ranked during the season, the Spartans made a deep postseason run, earning recognition and respect statewide.
Turning Points
The District Tournament served as the season's true launching pad:
In the semifinal, Scobey avenged two regular-season losses to Circle, holding them to just 26 points after previously giving up 49 and 52.
Bench players, especially freshman Ava Stentoft, stepped up big when starters got into foul trouble.
In the final, Scobey took down North Country, a 4-time district champion and back-to-back state title holder, holding them to 27 points.
These two back-to-back upsets solidified the team’s belief in their ability to compete with—and beat—anyone.
Emerging Talent & Unsung Heroes
Several underclassmen and bench players made critical contributions:
Emery Rouse (8th grade) – Versatile and athletic, gave strong minutes guarding and playing multiple positions.
McKenna Nieskens (Freshman) – Stepped into a starting role in the district title game following a season-ending injury to Kennadi Cromwell. Handled the pressure like a seasoned vet.
Claire Lekvold – Reliable spark off the bench, often shifting momentum with hustle or clutch shots.
Chloe Handran – Hit a game-winning 3-pointer in the divisional semifinal against Circle with 10 seconds left.
Avery Wolfe – Scored four 3s in the first half of the divisional challenge game vs. Bainville, keeping the offense rolling.
Coach Lekvold noted, “You were going to see someone different step up every night.”
Team Response to Adversity
The Spartans showed mental toughness all season. Despite multiple key injuries—including to standout shooter Kennadi Cromwell and mid-season to Dylon Allestad—players rose to the challenge. Losses didn’t discourage the team but fueled their determination, culminating in a gritty playoff performance.
Senior Leadership
Though only one senior, Kaytie Aanstad, graduated, her impact was profound. Her ability to anchor the team on both ends of the floor and her leadership were invaluable to a roster full of underclassmen and developing players.
Looking Ahead
With only one senior graduating, the Spartans return nearly the entire roster. If Cromwell and Allestad recover well from knee injuries, they’ll add firepower to an already deep and battle-tested team. The experience of competing deep into the postseason should serve as a motivational springboard for a big return.
“They now know what it takes to be playing Saturday night at State.” – Coach Lekvold
The future of the program is bright, with plenty of capable players rising through the ranks.
