Shelley, Idaho — Coming off a state championship season, the Shelley High School girls basketball team faced the challenge of rebuilding after the graduation of four key seniors. Under the steady leadership of Head Coach Jessica Jones, the Lady Russets embraced that challenge and turned a season of growth into one marked by resilience, team unity, and exciting development. “We had some big shoes to fill,” said Coach Jones. “But I was proud of how our girls stepped up. It took time, but by the district tournament, we were peaking at the right time.” Key Contributors and Breakout Performers Junior Mia Williams served as the engine of Shelley’s offense. Whether pushing the tempo, attacking the rim, or knocking down threes, Mia’s versatility and relentless pace kept opposing defenses on their heels all season. Sarah Kidman emerged as one of the team’s biggest success stories. Transitioning from a shooting guard to a primary ball handler, Sarah stepped into a leadership role and confidently ran the offense while also playing strong on defense. “Sarah transformed her game this season,” said Jones. “Her confidence and ability to adapt were key to our success.” Turning Points and Team Growth One of the most impactful moments of the season came off the court when the coaching staff conducted individual interviews with each player just before the district tournament. “Open communication always results in good things,” said Jones. “Those meetings helped us clear the air, address challenges, and come together powerfully.” That emotional turning point helped solidify the team chemistry that carried them into postseason play. Handling Adversity with Heart The Lady Russets faced their share of adversity, including a serious preseason concussion suffered by one of their teammates. Throughout the season, the team rallied around her, offering support, inclusion, and patience as she worked through her recovery. “These girls showed so much heart,” Jones reflected. “They cared for each other in a way that went beyond basketball.” Leadership from the Senior Class This year’s seniors brought a powerful blend of character and competitiveness. From grit to kindness to exactness, each player contributed uniquely to the team dynamic and helped guide the younger players through a transition-heavy year. Looking Ahead With a young, hungry, and competitive group returning, the future of the Shelley girls' basketball looks bright. “We have players who are deeply invested in growing their skills during the offseason,” said Jones. “We play a very team-oriented style, but we’re focusing now on building each player’s individual strengths. That’s going to make us even stronger next season.”
