The Soquel High School swim team is gearing up for another successful season under the guidance of Coach Lucas Salles-Cunha. With the goal of repeating their league championship win from last year, Coach Lucas emphasizes the importance of individual goals and a holistic approach to achieving team success. The team has a strong focus on motivation and pushing each other to reach their full potential. Coach Lucas recognizes the key to success this season will be showing up and training efficiently. The team boasts a deep roster of talented swimmers, and Coach Lucas believes that maximizing their potential through efficient training and strong attendance at meets and league finals will ultimately lead them to victory. One of the top returning swimmers for the Soquel High School team is junior Oliver Santana. Oliver is not only a talented swimmer, but he is also praised for his leadership and character. With experience competing at the futures level on the club side, as well as qualifying for Cca and Ccs last year, Oliver will be a key player in the team's success this season. Other notable swimmers include Hazel Wilson and a mix of polo players who are looking to improve their skills in both swimming and water polo. When it comes to motivating his players, Coach Lucas understands that it is not a one-size-fits-all approach. He believes in taking the time to understand each individual's drive and finding ways to bring out the best in them. As the season progresses, the focus shifts to building on the basics and improving skills to benefit both the individual and the team. The team's schedule for the season includes tough opponents such as Aptos, Harbor, Santa Cruz, and SLV. Coach Lucas acknowledges that Aptos will be a tough competition, but he is confident that his team's depth and talent will give them an edge in each match. Aside from athletic success, Coach Lucas recognizes the importance of balancing academics and sports for his players. He encourages open communication and support for his student-athletes, making sure they understand the expectation to maintain their studies while also excelling in the pool. Lastly, Coach Lucas expresses his gratitude for all the support from parents, school faculty, and the community. He acknowledges that it takes a team effort to have a successful season, and he is appreciative of all the support and encouragement the team receives. He sends a final message to the Soquel High School community, saying, "Thank you for all your support, and we look forward to representing our school with pride and determination.
