The South Plainfield Girls’ Basketball team had a remarkable 2024-25 season, achieving their best record since 2014 and reaching the Quarterfinals of the State Tournament for the first time since 2016. The team’s success was the result of grit, leadership, and a tireless work ethic that made this year one to remember.
Key Contributors
Stella Sweeney averaged 14 points per game and hit a major milestone by reaching 1,000 career points in a memorable game against JP Stevens.
Samantha Moench contributed 9 ppg and was a lockdown defender, often tasked with guarding the opponent’s top player. She made a massive leap from her sophomore to junior year, finishing with 243 points, 174 rebounds, and nearly 4 steals per game.
MaKenzie Harris and Olivia Kapolka were reliable on both ends of the court, each averaging 7 points and 7 rebounds per game. Their inside presence and consistency were crucial in tight contests.
Season Highlights
South Plainfield defied expectations, upsetting teams outside their division and securing third place in a highly competitive winter tournament with larger schools. They finished 4th in the White Division, trailing only Middlesex, Spotswood, and Edison, and were able to defeat a Red Division team for the first time—an impressive step forward for the program.
Defining Moments
The season’s tone shifted after an early game against JP Stevens, where the team realized its full potential. A key comeback win over Edison, after trailing at halftime, showed their ability to adapt and seize opportunities. The team’s high-paced, running game created constant fast breaks and defensive pressure, wearing opponents down throughout games.
Player Development
Samantha Moench emerged as a standout, transforming into both an elite defender and a reliable scorer. Her all-around impact symbolized the program’s growth this year. Other rising contributors like MaKenzie Harris also expanded their roles significantly.
Responding to Adversity
Injuries and tough losses never derailed this group. A major test came against Oak Knoll when South Plainfield played without both of its centers. The guards stepped up, showing heart and resilience. After a tough second loss to Spotswood, the team regrouped and used the setback as motivation for a stronger postseason push.
Senior Leadership
The senior class, led by Stella Sweeney, Olivia Kapolka, and Emily Davis, brought unmatched leadership and energy. Whether by setting examples on the court or lifting underclassmen off it, this trio left a lasting impact on the program. Sweeney’s performance, Kapolka’s leadership, and Davis’ energy helped fuel the team’s best season in nearly a decade.
Looking Ahead
The future is bright. The return of players like Samantha Moench, MaKenzie Harris, Jiselle Lennon, Aaliyah Spaulding, Ava Aneses, and Julia Adenau promises continued success. With momentum and emerging talent, South Plainfield is poised to build on this year’s accomplishments.
Offseason Goals
Coach DeVivo plans to focus on player development and expanding the depth of the program. By growing the skill set of the entire roster, she aims to build long-term success and develop the next wave of standout performers.
