Teamwork and Grit Define the 2024 Season Despite a roster of just 13 athletes, the St. Clair High School Boys Swim & Dive team, led by Head Coach Suzanne Likins, turned in a resilient and hard-fought 2024 season. Facing a more competitive division, the Saints never backed down and found momentum after a strong second-place finish at the county meet, which Coach Likins described as a pivotal moment that “gave the team some steam to roll through other teams.” “We came together and fought for every point,” said Coach Likins. “This team cheered each other on and picked up those who weren’t on top for that meet.” Key Contributors and Standout Performers Several athletes emerged as crucial to the team’s success: Jack Lucas (Sophomore) – A versatile and fierce competitor who thrives on the challenge of any race. Zakir Jahn – The team’s IM and fly specialist who stepped into any spot to help the team score. Truman Jarsma – Top diver and also contributed points in the 100 breast. Cole Stockwell – Transitioned from distance to sprint events after an injury, becoming vital to sprint relays. Will Rapier – A sprinter and flexible athlete who filled multiple roles. Owen Johnston – Developed into the team’s top distance swimmer with consistently strong performances. Emerging contributors included: Ethan Murray – Exceeded expectations by scoring significantly across multiple events. Carter VanSingel – Alternated between sprint and distance as needed. Joe Jalosky (Freshman) – Qualified for regionals in diving and also impressed in the 50 free. Adapting to Adversity The Saints faced injuries that impacted the season’s end, but the team remained united and competitive. Coach Likins credited the athletes for embracing their roles and supporting one another through adversity. Senior Legacy and Leadership While specific seniors weren’t named, Coach Likins highlighted their leadership and versatility in carrying the team forward during key meets and mentoring younger athletes along the way. Eyes on States and a Strong Offseason With 13 athletes expected to return next year, the future looks bright for the program. Coach Likins is aiming high, intending to send at least five athletes and two relays to the state meet. “We have great talent that needs to improve on technique and strength. Strength is key to improving times and recovery,” she noted. The focus this offseason: building stamina, technique, and muscle.
