In a season that marked both growth and grit, the St. Lucy’s varsity girls basketball team, led by Head Coach Dominic Mejico, reached new heights—earning their first playoff bid in over 12 years and building momentum for the future.
Season of Progress and Milestones
This year was Coach Mejico’s third at the helm, and the progress was undeniable. With a growing win total and a resilient roster, the team secured an at-large playoff bid in Division 4AA—a major milestone for the program. Though the first-round game ended in a narrow 24-20 loss, it was a testament to the team’s commitment and competitive fire.
Tournament play also showcased the team’s development:
3rd place at the Calvary Baptist Tournament
Champions of the Silver Division at their own “Queens of the Court” event
Standout Contributors
Three players led the charge throughout the season:
Senior Kira Carrol, the team’s defensive anchor, led with over 80 steals, guided the team in transition offense, and brought steady leadership.
Junior Danika Mejico, the team’s leading scorer, was a do-it-all player—able to play and defend all five positions while ranking among the top three in blocks, steals, rebounds, and assists.
Sophomore Stella Yegge controlled the paint, leading the team in rebounds and finishing second in blocks, while also showing offensive improvement as the season progressed.
Defining Moments & Team Growth
A key moment came early, when the team lost their season opener on a last-second shot. Instead of letting the loss derail them, the girls bounced back with three straight wins that same week—a defining stretch that set the tone for the rest of the season.
Two players who saw major growth:
Junior Kate Campbell emerged as a lockdown guard and transition scorer, poised for a standout senior season.
Freshman Ada Cuevas gained confidence late in the season, using her shooting ability to space the floor, fueling excitement for her sophomore year.
Handling Adversity with Heart
The team faced its share of challenges, including an injury to a freshman forward that affected their interior defense. Despite the setback, the group rallied. “Every tough loss, the team was disappointed but up for the next challenge,” Coach Mejico said. “The team spirit and parent support were great with this group.”
Senior Class Legacy
This year’s senior class brought experience, effort, and unity:
Brooke Baur and Celeste Traver contributed crucial perimeter shooting.
Aliyah Aghili provided strength inside and battled on the boards.
Across the board, Coach Mejico could count on his seniors for consistency and leadership, creating a family-like environment in the locker room.
Bright Future Ahead
With three returning starters and a crop of promising underclassmen, the future is bright at St. Lucy’s. The focus heading into the offseason:
Improve conditioning to play full-court defense
Boost three-point shooting to increase spacing and scoring
“I’m excited to help these athletes become not only better players, but better leaders,” said Coach Mejico.
