As the fall season approaches, the Steele Canyon High School softball team is gearing up for an exciting and challenging year. To get an inside scoop on what to expect from the team, I had the pleasure of speaking with Coach Kevin Pearlstein. As a veteran coach with over 15 years of experience at Steele Canyon, Coach Pearlstein has led the team to multiple league and CIF championships. Let’s take a closer look at the team and what the upcoming season holds for them.
Coach Pearlstein’s main goal for the team is consistent every year – to improve from the beginning of the season to the end, with a peak performance during league and CIF playoffs. The ultimate goal is to win the league, qualify for CIF, and ultimately bring home the CIF championship trophy. With a solid track record of success, it’s no surprise that the team continues to strive for excellence year after year.
When asked about the top returners for this season, Coach Pearlstein mentioned Senior Kamea Seunarine, who has already signed to play at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. Along with Seunarine, the team has the talent and skill of Sophomores Marina Gonzalez and Ily Barclay, who were 1st and 2nd team all Grossmont League selections last year. Junior Hailey Trujillo, who was also a 2nd team all Grossmont League selection, completes the group of top returners. Coach Pearlstein highlighted that all four players are tremendously talented, but most importantly, they prioritize the team’s goals over their individual accomplishments.
In addition to the experienced players, the team also has two freshmen who are expected to make an impact this year. Freshman pitcher Bailey Evans will be competing for innings on the mound, while Freshman Kallan Shaw will be vying for a starting spot in the lineup. Their skills and contributions will be critical in the success of the team this year.
Leadership is a crucial aspect of any successful team, and the Steele Canyon Cougars are no exception. This year, the captains are Kamea Seunarine, Bella Azevedo, and Hailey Trujillo. Coach Pearlstein praised all three of them for their exceptional leadership skills, academic excellence, and commitment to putting the team first. These qualities will undoubtedly set the tone for the rest of the team and help guide them to success.
Team building and camaraderie are also essential components of a successful team.
