As Coach Ashley Broom prepares for another exciting season with the Sunnyvale High School track and field team, she is confident in the potential of her returning athletes and impressed by the newcomers who are making an immediate impact. The team is motivated by a strong desire to continue the tradition of success that has been established in the past 13 years under Coach Broom's leadership. One of the top returning players from last season is Chiora Enyinna-Okeigbo. As a five-event athlete, Chiora's versatility and dedication make her a valuable asset to the team. She was a District Champion in all five events last season and qualified for State Competition in the high jump, 100-meter hurdles, and 400-meter race. Not only did she qualify, but she also finished in the top three in each event and set new school records. Her talent and leadership make her a force to be reckoned with on the track. Another standout athlete to watch this season is freshman Kaelyn Gardner. With an impressive cross-country season under her belt, Kaelyn is a versatile athlete who can excel in both distance races and relays. Coach Broom is excited to see her potential and impact on the team this season. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Broom looks for athletes who possess qualities such as leadership, dedication, and a positive attitude. While the team is still young, there are several players who are already demonstrating these qualities and are in the running for the captain role. Motivating athletes to push themselves to their full potential can be a challenge, but Coach Broom strives to make sure her team knows their value and the importance of their hard work. She emphasizes the importance of teamwork and creating a positive and supportive team dynamic. The athletes have also been excellent at cheering each other on and pushing each other to work harder. This season has presented some unique challenges for the team, including not having a full-size track to train on due to construction and inclement weather causing a canceled meet. However, the team has remained positive and flexible, ready to take on whatever challenges come their way. They are looking forward to getting on the track and showcasing their skills. As for the team's schedule, they will be facing tougher opponents this season, which will provide more competition and opportunities for growth. This change in competition may also require a shift in Coach Broom's coaching style, as she adapts to the different strengths and weaknesses of the team's opponents. In terms of training and conditioning, the team prioritizes building a strong body and a positive mindset. They spend three days a week in the weight room and focus on volume in their workouts early in the season to build endurance. As the season progresses, the focus shifts to speed and fine-tuning their skills. Coach Broom emphasizes the importance of keeping the athletes healthy throughout the training process. As with any team, there are both strengths and weaknesses to consider. Coach Broom believes that a strong mindset is crucial in track and field, and she works to instill positive self-talk in her athletes during workouts and competitions. She also recognizes the importance of addressing weaknesses and continuously improving as a team. In conclusion, this season is shaping up to be an exciting one for the Sunnyvale High School track and field team. With a mix of experienced and talented returning athletes and driven newcomers, they are ready to face any challenges and strive for success. Under the guidance of Coach Ashley Broom, this team is sure to continue the tradition of excellence and make their school proud.
