As the leaves begin to hint at fall, the cross-country team at Tandem Friends School is already in motion—quite literally. Under the leadership of Coach Jason Farr, the team is not just preparing for another season but building on a foundation of aerobic strength, speed development, and mental resilience. Offseason Focus: Aerobic Power Meets Speed & Strength Preparation for greatness doesn’t happen in-season. At Tandem Friends, runners commit to a structured winter and summer training program designed to enhance aerobic capacity and overall physical strength. Spring track is all about sharpening speed, giving athletes a well-rounded edge when the cross country season begins. Camps & Team Bonding The team continues to grow tighter off the course. Many athletes attend the Blue Ridge Running Camp during the summer—an experience that blends advanced training with camaraderie. They also engage in informal team training sessions, cultivating both chemistry and accountability. Roster Outlook: Even Stronger in 2025 Despite losing just one member of last year’s top seven, the program is set to be even stronger this fall, thanks to a rising crop of talented young runners. With depth forming and experience returning, expectations are high. Runners to Watch: Building Off Greatness Hayes Buppert – Last year’s VISAA Division III State Champion returns as a junior and is training with even more intensity this offseason. His goal? Defend his title and inspire the team. Jack Blemker (Senior) – A steady leader with big-race experience. Miles Griffith (Junior) – Emerging as a key contributor and expected to be one of the team's front-runners. Training Philosophy: More Than Miles Beyond the miles logged, Coach Farr emphasizes mental discipline, a cornerstone of long-distance running. The coaching staff constantly researches new ways to keep training effective and athletes motivated, healthy, and mentally strong, especially important in a sport that demands grit as much as stamina. Challenges Ahead: Depth & Durability Being a small school, Tandem Friends faces the challenge of limited depth. “We have to be smart and careful with injuries,” says Coach Farr. “We don’t have the luxury of numbers, but we do have heart and commitment—and that’s just as powerful.” With a returning state champion, a strong core group, and a focus on long-term development, Tandem Friends Cross Country is poised for another impressive season. In this program, every step counts—and every runner matters. “Our edge is preparation. Our strength is unity.” – Coach Farr
