The 2024-25 wrestling season was a strong step forward for the Tates Creek High School wrestling program. With a young but determined roster and key leadership from upperclassmen, the team made significant strides, including placing in the state championships for the first time in over a decade.
Key Contributors
Leading the charge was freshman standout Aiden Ruiz (106 lbs), who capped off an impressive 39-6 season with an 8th-place finish at the state championships. At the heavyweight division, Miles Hayward (285 lbs) compiled a dominant 38-4 record, placing 6th at state and establishing himself as a top contender heading into his senior year.
Another emerging force was Camren Walls at 132 lbs. Despite wrestling much of the season against heavier competition, Walls showed grit and improvement, finishing 28-19 and earning a berth at the state tournament.
Season Overview
Overall, the season was a success. The team’s growth was evident, and the leadership from upperclassmen helped mold a young group into a competitive squad. Highlighting the season was the historic return to the state podium, with two individual placers and a top-40 team finish—the program's best showing in 13 years.
Development and Resilience
As the season progressed, several wrestlers stepped up into bigger roles. Camren Walls, in particular, grew in confidence and performance late in the year. The team responded admirably to adversity, whether it was injuries, tough losses, or lineup adjustments. Wrestlers frequently filled gaps and moved up weight classes when needed, showcasing their team-first mentality.
Leadership and Senior Impact
This year’s senior class may have been small in number, but not in impact. Aiden Ruiz, a senior in his final year, set the tone with his work ethic and performance, becoming a role model for the underclassmen. Despite having just one other senior, who was a first-year wrestler, the leadership presence was felt throughout the room.
Looking Ahead
With the majority of the roster returning and offseason training already underway, the future looks promising for Tates Creek wrestling. Miles Hayward will return as a senior leader and state medalist, aiming for a championship run. There’s also excitement around continuing to grow the team’s depth, especially by filling out all weight classes and expanding the girls' wrestling program.
