As the start of a new school year approaches, the excitement and anticipation for high school sports is building. For the athletic teams at Thomas Downey High School, the upcoming season is looking promising. We sat down with Coach Luis Magana to get a preview of what to expect from the team this year. Magana is entering his tenth year as the head coach of the varsity football team, and his experience and passion for the sport has proven to be invaluable. Question: Can you give us an overview of the team this year? Coach Luis Magana: This year's team is a mix of experienced players and new faces. We have a solid core of returners who have been working hard during the offseason to improve their skills. We also have some talented freshmen and sophomores who are hungry to make their mark on the team. Overall, I am impressed with the dedication and work ethic of this group of players. They have a strong desire to succeed and are willing to put in the effort needed to make it happen. Q: What would you say are the team's strengths and weaknesses going into this season? LM: One of our biggest strengths is our team chemistry. The players have developed a strong bond and trust in each other, both on and off the field. This camaraderie will serve us well during the tougher moments of the season. Our work ethic is also a strength, as our players are constantly pushing each other to be better. As for weaknesses, I would say we still have some work to do in perfecting our execution and decision making on the field. We have talented players, but we need to make sure we are making the right choices and executing properly in order to reach our full potential. Q: Is there a particular player or group of players that stand out on the team? LM: We have a few standout players who have proven themselves to be leaders on the team. Our quarterback, Thomas, is a senior and has been a key player for us for the past few years. He has great leadership skills and a strong arm, making him a valuable asset on the field. We also have our junior running back, Sarah, who is a dynamic player with incredible speed and agility. She has been putting in a lot of work in the offseason and I believe she is poised for a breakout season. Lastly, our junior wide receiver, David, is a natural playmaker and has the potential to make big plays happen at any given moment.
