As the 2024 baseball season approaches, excitement and high expectations surround the team at Tonganoxie High School. With the return of seven starters and a deep pitching staff, the team is ready to compete for a state championship. We sat down with Coach Admin Admin to get a preview of the team and what fans can expect this season. Coach Admin Admin expressed that the ultimate goal for the team is a return trip to the state tournament. However, he emphasized that the key to achieving this goal is the daily focus and hard work of the players. With a talented group of athletes, the potential for success is high, but it will take a team effort to reach their goals. One of the standout players on the team mentioned by Coach Admin Admin is Trevor McGraw. A senior shortstop and pitcher, McGraw was an All-State selection last season and is expected to have another strong season. With a high velocity fastball and an above-average breaking ball, McGraw has all the tools to excel on the field. However, Coach Admin Admin stresses the importance of McGraw taking on a leadership role and stepping up in big games. Another player to watch is senior Luke Kessinger. At 6'4" and with a plus fastball and power at the plate, Kessinger is a physically imposing player with the potential to be a major contributor this season. Coach Admin Admin believes that as Kessinger matures mentally and gains confidence, he can be a key player on the team. Brendan Briley, a returning center fielder with a strong arm, is also expected to have a big impact this season. Coach Admin Admin notes that with the size and strength to be a middle-of-the-lineup hitter, Briley is looking to build off of his solid junior season and put up big numbers at the plate. One of the challenges for the team this season is replacing a strong group of seniors, particularly at the catching position. Sophomore Baron Dohrn and senior Ben Plake will compete for the starting catcher spot. Dohrn will have to adjust quickly to the varsity game while handling a high-powered pitching staff, while Plake brings athleticism and versatility to the team. Another key player is sophomore left-handed pitcher, Merek Davenport. Standing at 6'7", Davenport has the frame and potential to be a special player on the team. He will also compete for a starting role at first base.
