The 2024-25 season for Valley View High School’s Boys Varsity Basketball team, led by Coach Jim Long, was one defined by growth, resilience, and development. Competing in a league that challenged their depth and experience, the Eagles stood tall against adversity and laid a strong foundation for the program's future. Key Contributors Step Up Several players played critical roles in the Eagles’ journey this season. Returning guard Kenneth Hutchinson provided veteran leadership and consistent scoring, hitting double figures in every game while offering strong defense and ball-handling under pressure. Sophomore Davion Moore, in his first varsity season, was a breakout star, finishing as the team’s second-leading scorer and top rebounder, showing maturity and strength beyond his years. Junior Elijah McDaniel also made an impact in his first year on varsity. Known initially as a three-point specialist, McDaniels evolved his game and is poised to take on a larger role next season. Senior Kaleb Moreno, despite being undersized, was the team’s glue. A defensive anchor and selfless playmaker, he embraced a utility role, doing whatever was needed—from setting screens and making assists to locking down bigger opponents. Competing Against the Odds “This season was one of growth,” Coach Long reflected. “We were placed in a league above our level, but our players never quit and always competed.” Even in tough matchups, the Eagles displayed resilience. A key moment came during a rematch against a team that had previously dominated them. “The second time around, we were within eight points late in the game. That speaks volumes about their mentality,” Long added. Development Across the Board Throughout the season, every player on the roster showed improvement. Whether it was adjusting to varsity-level speed, increasing effort, or sharpening their skills, the team’s development was evident. Coach Long credited the group’s consistent commitment and attitude, especially in response to challenges such as tough losses and a size disadvantage. Seniors Leave Their Mark The senior class, led by Moreno, brought much-needed leadership and work ethic. “They showed how to compete and how to win or lose with sportsmanship,” said Coach Long, underscoring the positive culture they helped foster. Looking Ahead With a core of promising returners, the future looks bright for Valley View. “If they work in the offseason, we should be able to return to the success of previous years,” said Long. The program has already begun laying the groundwork—adjusting next year’s schedule to better match team capabilities and focusing on strength training, skill development, and hustle. Goals for Next Season Coach Long has made it clear: “Our goal is to win our league and advance in the playoffs.” With players already in the weight room and working four days a week before school even begins, the program is well on its way.
