As the spring sports season approaches, all eyes are on the Waynesboro High School track and field team. After losing several key players to graduation, Coach Jim Rickett is focused on developing and rebuilding both the boy's and girl's teams. In this preview article, we sat down with Coach Rickett to discuss the top returning players, new players to watch, team chemistry, and his coaching philosophy for the upcoming season. Coach Rickett highlighted the importance of development for both the boy's and girl's teams this year. With that in mind, the top returning players from last season will play a crucial role in leading the team to success. For the girl's team, Coach Rickett pointed out the experience and talent of Ben Williams in the Javelin, Katie Baker in the Discus, Jaeda Dockman in the Highjump, and Camryn Bonner in the Pole vault. All four of these athletes are District Qualifiers and have the potential to qualify for other events as well. Their experience and determination make them special and valuable assets to the team. While the team is focused on development, there are a few new players who Coach Rickett believes will make an immediate impact. These include Ben Williams in the Javelin, Katie Baker in the Discus, Jaeda Dockman in the Highjump, and Camryn Bonner in the Pole vault. All four of these athletes have a lot of experience and have already qualified for Districts in their respective events. Coach Rickett believes that they have the potential to excel in other events as well and make a significant contribution to the team's success. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Rickett believes that it is too soon to tell as many players are new and have never competed in track and field before. However, he does encourage the team's seniors to be the voices and leaders of the team. As for team chemistry, Coach Rickett believes that it is crucial to the team's success. While they do not have designated team captains, they encourage support and camaraderie among all team members, especially during dual meets. With such a young and inexperienced team, Coach Rickett understands that it can be challenging to motivate players to reach their full potential. He believes that the key is to find the balance between pushing them to their limits and not pushing too far. The individual nature of track and field also means that each athlete is responsible for pushing themselves and setting their own goals. Coach Rickett and the coaching staff are there to support and guide them in achieving those goals. The biggest challenge for the team this season is their youth and lack of experience. Many of the athletes are new to track and field and do not understand the level of dedication and hard work required to succeed. It will be a learning process for both the coaches and the athletes, but Coach Rickett is confident that they will rise to the challenge. As for expectations, the team's schedule is uncertain, and their opponents are unknown due to the team's inexperience. However, Coach Rickett is excited to see what the team can accomplish and is looking forward to seeing their progress throughout the season. Coach Rickett's coaching style remains consistent, and his philosophy remains the same – to develop and support each individual athlete to reach their full potential. He believes that it is essential to focus on each athlete's strengths and work on improving their weaknesses to help them excel in their respective events. With a mix of experienced and new athletes, he understands the importance of patience, guidance, and encouragement in their development. While physical training and conditioning are critical, Coach Rickett also stresses the importance of mental preparation. He acknowledges that some veteran athletes have a strong mental game, but many of the younger athletes are still learning and building their confidence. As a coach, he believes it is essential to help them develop the mental aspect of their game, as it can make a significant difference in their performance and success. Coach Rickett did not mention any specific changes or improvements made to the team's training and conditioning program. However, he did emphasize the importance of early season preparation, especially for athletes who are involved in other sports. With a limited amount of time to train and prepare for track and field, the team must focus on conditioning and building their skills to be successful. The Waynesboro High School track and field team faces some challenges this season, with a young and inexperienced roster. However, with the guidance and leadership of Coach Jim Rickett, the team is focused on the development and rebuilding for both the boy's and girl's teams. With a mix of experienced and new athletes, the team has the potential to surprise opponents and exceed expectations. As they continue to train and prepare, one thing is for sure – the Waynesboro High School track and field team is a force to be reckoned with.
