The Whitney High School boys' lacrosse team is gearing up for another exciting and competitive season. As we talked to Coach Steve Cabral about the upcoming season, it was clear that the team has high aspirations and a strong determination to achieve their goals. Let's take a closer look at the players, strategies, challenges, and philosophy that will make this a season to remember for the Whitney High School lacrosse team. Coach Cabral shared that the team has 3 first-team All-League players returning this season - Jack Beaulieu, Joe Ligas, and Reed Van Stralen. These talented players have committed to D1 Colleges and bring a strong work ethic both on and off the field. Joe Ligas, a junior, has been named the SFL Player of the Year and is a top talent in the country for his class. Jack Beaulieu, a senior, has been a 4-year varsity player and is known as the top LSM in the league. Reed Van Stralen, also a junior, is an explosive offensive player who led the team last year with 60 goals despite battling through injuries. These players have set a high bar for themselves and have been working hard year-round to improve their skills and athletic abilities. While the team boasts a strong core of returning players, Coach Cabral believes that junior Tyler Darrow, who was brought up to Varsity during playoffs last year, will make an immediate impact. Darrow led the JV team last season with 38 goals and 25 assists, and his skills will be valuable additions to the offense this year. The team has 4 returning captains - Joe Ligas, Jack Beaulieu, Evan Jepson, and Logan Sindelar. Coach Cabral looks for players who are not only vocal and have strong leadership on the field, but also have a strong work ethic that sets an example for the rest of the team. These captains have been chosen for their abilities to lead both on and off the field and to bring the team together as a cohesive unit. Coach Cabral shared that the team has a strong sense of chemistry, built from playing together for several years and growing up together. He believes that keeping practices competitive but under control is key to maintaining team chemistry.
